The boys from Brunswick, Ga. brave bumpy
seas
for a bountiful catch.
Today my fishing buddies the Ryan,Cody, and Dawson Gibbs and their buds Gary and Ryan Barksdale from Brunswick, Ga. They came down to fish this Sunday based on a forecast from the NWS for fair winds and calm seas. Guess what, the NWS missed the call again and ordinarily with small craft exercise caution on the table I would popstpone or cancel the trip. Well since they came down all the way from Georgia and even though I warned them it would be uncomfortable they said lets not waste the trip down so away we go. As I had predicted it was really bumpy and wind blown. Not unsafe if you exercised caution but doable. We got a well full of pogies down near the steeple and took our time getting to 8A reef (about 45 minutes, ordinarily 20 minutes). We were greeted with a steady bite on the kings and got a total of eleven Kingfish. We also had an opportunity at a total of three Mahi but, were only able to get a solid hookup on one of the three. The weather was sloppy, with seas running three to four feet with a four second wave period and winds blowing at 15 knots, gusting to 21 knots. Due to the wind and the seas I got a chance to go swimming on 8A to remove line that got wrapped around the propeller when the autopilot turned too sharply trying to fight the wind and seas. Even with the nasty conditions a good time was had by all and the fine seaworthy folks from Brunswick went home to Georgia with a full cooler of fish filets and some good memories.
