Today my fishing buddies for a full day
were Sean, Greg, Tony and Bernard who work in the freight department for
Fedex over in Orlando. We departed my dock here in Cocoa Beach at the
usual 7:00 AM and proceeded through the locks. A quick stop at Sunrise
Marina to add a few gallons of fuel and a box of sardines and we were
off.
First stop as usual was a run down the beach in search of a
few pogies for the live well and after a couple of tosses of the net it
was off to 8A for some slow trolling. The bite was not red hot but
steady and were were able to catch more than a limit of kingfish by
about 1:30 PM.
We discussed our options and decided to opt to try to catch
some snapper for the fish box in lieu of running offshore for Mahi since
the bottom fishing option would also leave the possibility of a Cobia
open to us as well. After a 45 minute run to the north to some
productive bottom I've been fishing since before Christmas we arrived
and anchored up in a "screaming" current. We were fishing in only 60' of
water and 12 ounces of lead wouldn't hold bottom making the bottom
fishing difficult at best. We were able to catch a dozen or so snapper
for our efforts and were able to bag only two keepers. We also caught
two Cobia while we were bottom fishing. The first was a 32 1/2 inch that
made it way into our landing net, dang, just short, tagged and released.
The second was a 26 incher that was netted and quickly tagged and
released as well.
The current frustrated us and the wind picked up in the late
afternoon making the 30 mile ride home a little bumpy, but, as usual my
beloved Bluewater 2850 ate up the 3'-4' seas with a 4 second wave period
wind slop and we were back in Port Canaveral within one hour.
The guys had a side bet on who would catch the largest fish
of the day and the winner hands down was Bernard with a 20# King. Final tally for the day:
13 Kingfish with 10 kept for the table
2 keeper Red Snapper
2 Cobia tagged and released to grow up |
